Tokyo Mental Health provides high-quality English language psychological assessment services to foreigners residing in Japan who wish to receive a psychology consultation to discuss their mental health, or a full psychology evaluation for developmental disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Learning Disabilities, including specific learning difficulties (LD).

The psychology consultation will review your concerns and screen for your symptoms. The purpose of the psychology consultation is to highlight areas of concern and provide the psychologist clinical context to inform and guide further recommendations. Practically, this involves answering questions during an interview and completing standardized questionnaires.
You and/or your child would have an intake interview and complete a series of screening questionnaires. Once completed, the psychologist would contact you to discuss the results, and advise you on what to do next. They may suggest for you to proceed with a full psychological evaluation, that you see one of our counselors, or that you follow up with a psychiatry appointment at a clinic, based on your needs. This consultation can be completed online or face to face at our Shintomi therapy office.
If you and/or your child needs a full psychology evaluation to assess a suspected problem with attention, learning, memory or social communication and interaction, then we can offer full, UK/US standard psychology evaluations with a report. This would typically include:

The ASEBA is a collection of questionnaires which assesses the individual’s adaptive and maladaptive behavior and overall functioning across a range of settings from the perspectives of different informants. For example, for children, the scales are completed by the child, their parent/carer and their teacher. The assessment can be used for clients aged from 1 year 6 months to 90 years old, and typically takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete.
The ADI-R is used for assessment of, and treatment planning for, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and can also help distinguish symptoms of autism from other developmental disorders. The test is based on an interview of the parents or carers of the client, and can be used for children from as young as 2 years old to adults. The ADI-R typically takes 2 hours to complete.
The ADOS-2 is used for the assessment of Autism Spectrum Disorders. Testing is based on observation of the client undertaking tasks in different settings. There are four available modules (one for each age range) including children as young as 12 months, older children, teenagers, and adults. The ADOS-2 takes approximately 2 hours to complete.
CAARS is composed of two ratings (one self-report and one observer scale) focused on identifying symptoms and aiding the assessment of ADHD in adults aged 18 years old and above. The scale typically takes 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete.
CARS is a behavioural rating scale used to assess the symptoms and aid the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders. The scale can also help differentiate the symptoms of autism from other developmental disorders and is completed by the parent or carer of the child who is more than 2 years old. The scale typically takes 30 minutes to complete.
The Dyslexia Screening Test is used to indicate whether an individual’s symptoms reflect the likelihood of dyslexia without the use of a full diagnostic assessment. The Junior Edition is for use in children aged 6 years 6 months to 11 years 5 months, and the Second Edition is for children aged 11 years 6 months to 16 years 5 months. The test typically takes 30 to 45 minutes to complete.

The MMPI-2 is a standardised psychometric test of personality for adults aged 18 years and above. The test is used to aid assessment, treatment planning and differential diagnosis. The test takes approximately 90 to 120 minutes to complete.
The National Adult Reading Test (NART) is designed to test premorbid intelligence levels of English-speaking adults presenting with dementia or traumatic brain injury.
The Vanderbilt scale compiles two ratings (one parent and one teacher rating), and focuses on identifying symptoms of ADHD in children aged 6 to 12 years old. The scale, including an interview, takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes to complete.
Raven’s Matrices is a non-verbal test of fluid intelligence (IQ) which also provides a measure of the abstract reasoning ability. The test is composed of 60 multiple-choice style questions, and can be used for people aged 6 years and above. The test typically takes 30 minutes to complete. It is ideal for children and adults who would like to take an intelligence test that does not require language ability.
SCALES is an assessment tool that identifies and evaluates symptoms of ADHD in school-aged children from 5 to 18 years old. The SCALES is completed by a parent/carer and a school teacher to assess ADHD symptoms in the home and school environment. The questionnaire typically takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete.
The Stroop test is a popular neuropsychological test that measures selective attention, cognitive flexibility and processing speed, which helps to evaluate the client’s executive function. It aids the assessment of ADHD and can be administered to clients aged 3 to 75 years old. The Stroop test is available for native English speakers.
The Vineland-II JP is a test completed by the client, the parent/carer, and teacher of the client aged from infancy to 90 years old. The test measures the client’s abilities in communication, daily living and socialisation to aid the diagnosis of intellectual and developmental disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, Asperger’s Syndrome, and developmental delays. The test takes approximately 20 to 60 minutes to complete.
The WAIS-IV is designed to measure intelligence and cognitive ability for persons aged 16 to 90 years old. The test provides a general intelligence score (IQ) and four index scores, including verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory and processing speed. The WAIS-IV aids the diagnosis of ADHD and learning disabilities, and typically takes 2 to 3 hours to complete.
The WIAT-III is used to assess the academic achievement of children, adolescents and adults aged 4 to 50 years old. The test can be used to assess a broad range of skills or only a particular area of need. The test takes approximately 45 to 90 minutes to complete.
The WISC-V is an intelligence test designed for children aged 6 to 16 years old and aids the assessment of ADHD and learning disabilities. The WISC-V is used to assess a child’s general intellectual ability (IQ) and also provides five index scores, including verbal comprehension, visual spatial, fluid reasoning, working memory, and processing speed. The WISC-V typically takes 2 to 4 hours to complete.
The WPPSI-IV is an intelligence test designed for children aged 2 years 6 months to 7 years 7 months. The WPPSI-IV is used to assess a child’s general intellectual ability (IQ) and identify intellectual giftedness or cognitive delay and learning difficulties. The test takes approximately 2 to 4 hours to complete.
Shahroze Suzuki has a Masters, M.Phil. in Professional Psychology from Bahria University Karachi Campus in Pakistan.
